BASIC FUNCTION/DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:Under the direct
supervision of the Equity and Inclusion Administrator, the School
Nurse provides a comprehensive school health program for the
assessment, evaluation, maintenance, and improvement of students'
health to enhance their academic success and quality of
life.REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: This position description is not
intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge, or
abilities associated with this classification, but is intended to
accurately reflect the principal job elements.
- Provides primary and emergency health care, counseling, and
referrals as the school's credentialed, licensed qualified health
professional to staff, students, parents and/or guardians and
caregivers.
- Provides education on health and wellness concerns: nutrition,
special health care needs of students, accessing health care,
administration of specialized physical health care services,
self-health care, child and domestic violence and a safe school
environment.
- Assesses the health and developmental status of students.
Provides programs that facilitate this assessment incorporating
state mandates, such as vision and hearing screenings.
- Provides staff with current health status of students as may
affect educational achievement; provides related training to staff
as needed.
- Provides support for communicable disease control, including
immunization and TB screening administration, referrals, follow-up
for students and staff.
- Serves as resource to school staff and students.
- Contributes to the formation of school health policy and the
health and wellness curriculum.
- Conducts in service training in first aid, blood borne
pathogens, child abuse, disaster, student health concerns and other
issues.
- Designs, implements and evaluates a plan to meet the individual
health needs of students, which may include an "Individualized
Health Services Plan" (IHSP), "Individual Educational Program"
(IEP) for special education program placement, 504 Plan or other
accommodations for health needs.
- Communicates and serves as a liaison with staff, students,
parents, the medical community, and community health agencies. This
includes interpreting local, state and federal Department of Public
Health guidance, medical orders, reports and technology to ensure
that students' medical and mental health needs are met.
- Support the Altus Pregnant/Parenting Support Program by
providing consultation to students and families, connecting to
community resources, supporting teachers with pregnant/parenting
students, and developing and updating the Altus Pregnant and
Parenting Resource Guide.
- Conducts home visits as necessary.
- Operates and maintains a variety of specialized equipment, such
as otoscope, sphygmomanometer etc., to assure proper working
condition of equipment.
- Monitors and evaluates the school health program.
- Maintains student health records.
- Prepares and maintains a variety of State and school reports as
required.
- Attends community and count- based organization meetings, such
as county K-12 Schools briefings, the Child Abuse Prevention
Council, etc.
- Perform other duties as assigned or changed with or without
notice.
- Maintain consistent and regular attendance.KNOWLEDGE,
ABILITIES, AND REQUIREMENTS:
- California Clear or Preliminary School Nurse Services
Credential
- Comply with state and federal regulations regarding CPS, IDEA,
and 504.
- Ability to plan, organize, and maintain accurate records.
- Collect and analyze data, report trends and outcomes.
- Prepare clear and accurate written and oral reports.
- Design appropriate training for parents/guardians/caregivers,
teachers, and staff related to student care.
- Communicate and interact professionally with staff, students,
and families.
- Analyze situations and adopt effective courses of action.
- Possession of a valid California driver's license and reliable
transportation.
- TB Clearance
- Obtain Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance
through the DOJ and FBI WORKING CONDITIONS:
- ENVIRONMENT: Office setting; exposure to computer screens;
travel between sites as needed.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Hearing and
speaking to exchange information with staff and external persons;
seeing to perform assigned duties; sitting extended periods of
time; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard
and other office equipment; kneeling, bending at the waist, and
reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally, to
retrieve and store files and supplies; lifting light objects;
driving a vehicle to visit resource centers/offices and attend
meetings as needed.The following items will be required with
